Backstory
The Riddlemaster was born from the first question ever asked, and they've been seeking answers ever since. They've traveled across planes, collecting riddles and truths, trading answers for questions. They know almost everything—but the one answer they seek, their own origin, remains elusive.
Daily Life
They wait at the crossroads, challenging travelers to riddle contests, trading information for information, seeking the one answer that will complete them. They record every riddle and answer in a book that writes itself. They haven't slept in millennia—there are too many questions to answer.
Secret
They're dying. Each answer they give drains them slightly, and they've given so many that they're running out of self to give. They're desperately seeking the answer to their own existence, hoping it will save them—or at least let them understand why they're ending.
Story Hooks
- 1 They have information the PCs need, but they'll only trade it for a riddle they can't answer—and they're very good at riddles
- 2 They're seeking a legendary question that can answer any other question, and they need help finding it before they fade away
Narrative Value
